The biggest difference between these two therapies is how deeply they penetrate the body. Red light penetrates to a depth of around 4" and is helpful in accelerating the healing of muscular or tendon injuries. It can also be used to enhance overall health by targeting acupressure points. MagnaWave PEMF can penetrate as much as 16" which reaches any deep tissue or muscle inflammation or injuries. Both boost the natural self-healing potential of the body.
Electrical impulses are used in TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) therapy to temporarily numb pain. A TENS therapy machine works by manipulating the body’s pain signals and momentarily masking them with low-voltage electrical currents. TENS machines only work on the area to which the receptors are applied.
PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) stimulates the full body and offers long-lasting pain relief using electromagnetic energy. It is designed to lessen swelling and inflammation. In addition, it aids the body's natural healing process by promoting cell development and regeneration.
PEMF shows areas of sensitivity in an animal or human. Muscle movement is observed in an area were there is increased resistance from things like tension, inflammation, edema, lactic acid buildup, etc.
A horse's breathing and stride are linked - especially at faster gaits. When they canter or gallop, they take one breath with each stride - they inhale in suspension and exhale when their first foreleg hits the ground. Because of this link, anything that affects the horse's breathing also impacts their stride. Barrel racers have reported that regular halotherapy sessions have contributed to a decrease in their race time.
Yes, there are some contraindications for PEMF. If you have any concerns, we always recommend consulting with your veterinarian before beginning MagnaWave sessions. And please have your veterinarian contact us if they have questions regarding this therapy.
Active bleeding - because PEMF increases the circulation in the body, we need to ensure that your horse is not actively bleeding.
Pregnancy - although our MagnaWave machines are FDA cleared, there currently is no research available on the effects during a pregnancy. For this reason, we prefer not to provide sessions on a pregnant mare or other animal unless recommended by their veterinarian.
Cancer - undergoing treatment or on medications to treat.
Battery operated implanted device (ex: pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, etc.) - PEMF can drain the battery on these devices. In extreme cases, it can interfere with their internal wiring.
Organ transplant - PEMF has been shown to stimulate the immune system. Transplant recipients are usually taking immunosuppressants to allow their body to accept the organ.
External metal fixator or metal screws - PEMF can be used over internal hardware, but we recommend consulting with your physician or veterinarian before using around externally-attached metals.
Stents - PEMF has been shown to affect some stents. Please check with your physician or manufacturer to make sure they are compliant.
Since dry salt therapy is 100% natural and drug free, there are no negative side effects. After your session, you may notice your horse coughing and an increased mucus secretion because their nasal passages are clearing out. This is simply the salt doing its work to remove mucus and toxins from the lungs and airways.
We do recommend your horse have access to plenty of fresh water following a salt therapy session.
Much depends on the horse and whether or not a specific issue is being addressed. For overall wellness, a full-body session once or twice a week should suffice. If there is a specific issue or ailment to address, your horse may need more frequent sessions. Your horse may show improvement after a single session, but that will not provide lasting effects. As a certified practitioner, I work with my clients to determine what is best for their equine's needs.
Yes, however we recommend trying MagnaWave beforehand. Horses react differently to a session: some feel energized, others feel relaxed. *Always check the regulations for the event too.*
Please call your vet first! But yes. If it is colic due to impaction, MagnaWave can be used to stimulate the bowels.
Both devices employ PEMF technology. While a Bemer is a blanket is laid over the horse, MagnaWave machines have various attachments that can be used to cover the horse or applied to smaller areas for more concentrated focus. MagnaWave machines also provide the practitioner with the ability to change the intensity level. Additionally, MagnaWave ensures their practitioners are certified in the use of their machines and receive continuing education each year to maintain their practitioner status.
Yes, there are some contraindications. We always recommend consulting your veterinarian beforehand.
Photosensitive Medications - medications that cause photosensitivity can cause a negative reaction when red light therapy is employed. Please consult your veterinarian beforehand.
Cancer - red light should not be applied to animals diagnosed with any malignant cancer.
Pregnancy - red light can still be used on pregnant animals, just not near the abdomen area.
